Codeine is commonly given for pain relief to people who have undergone
surgery or who have serious injuries. Codeine acts in the brain to
decrease the feeling of pain and to reduce emotional response to pain. It
is also used to treat coughs (antitussive)
Codeine is a narcotic analgesic or a narcotic pain killer. Codeine is made
from poppy flowers, which are also used to make heroin and opium. Because
codeine is made from poppies it can be very addictive. Always make sure

narcotic analgesics.
Most common side effects: constipation; drowsiness; dry mouth;
urinary retention
